WARNING AGILITY IS ADDICTIVE !!!!!

Dog Agility is a very popular Canine sport which is great fun for your and your dog.

It is an assortment of equipment which should be negotiated by the dog. It is similar to an assault course with no more than 20 parts to complete, against the clock.

You will come across 2 main types of Course. An 'Agility' or a 'Jumping' course. An 'Agility' course will include the 'contact' equipment and a 'Jumping' course will not.

You can participate in Agility with any dog of any size as long as it is old enough and is physically fit enough. There are classes for all sizes and breeds of dog of all abilities.

The equipment is shown and named below.

CONTACT EQUIPMENT

There are 3 pieces of 'contact' equipment: A - frame, Dog Walk and See - saw.

The A - Frame

The dog is expected to run up one ramp and down the other side but should 'touch' the white 'contact' areas both sides.

The Dog Walk

The dog runs over the 3 planks and again is expected to 'touch' the white 'contact' areas at both ends.

The See - saw

A singular plank with 'contact' points on each end. There is a pivot in the middle and the dog is expected to touch both contact areas and should not leave the contact area until the see - saw has made contact with the ground.

NON - CONTACT EQUIPMENT

Open tunnel

Dogs should run straight through the tunnel from one side to the other from which ever end is instructed by the handler.

Closed tunnel

The dog should run straight through the opening of the tunnel pushing its way through the cloth and out the other side.

Long jump

This will consist of 2 - 5 boards for the dog to jump. The dog should clear the boards and stay within the marker poles.

Single jump

This should be cleared by the dog without displacing the pole. The height of the jump is determined by the height of the dog.

Weaves

This is the most difficult piece of equipment for the dog to learn, and in my opinion should be practiced regularly for the best results. Dogs are required to pass the first weave pole on their left shoulder and should continue to weave their way through the poles until they reach the end.
